Cindy and Mattheus, finally together, prepare to take time off and live together—when a stunning upset in their relationship tears them apart. Cindy flies home to New York, resigned to never work as a detective—and never see Mattheus—again.

And then a shocking phone call comes out of the blue it is Mattheus. A new body has turned up. Cindy at first refuses—until he tells her who it is his wife. They finally found her, on the shores of Key West. Brutally murdered, they suspect, by an abusive boyfriend.

Mattheus’ world is upside down, and Cindy has no choice but to fly back down to the islands and help him uncover what really happened. Why did she turn up now, after so many years? How did she turn up in Key West, so far from where he’d last seen her? Why had she never contacted him? Who was she dating? And have the police caught the right man?

Their investigation takes them deep into the underworld of Key West, a gorgeous, idyllic place where the locals gather to watch the sunset every night with an evening drink. It is an enchanting place—but as Cindy learns, it is also a place with a dark underbelly. Cindy prods deeper into the murder and her investigation takes her into the world of an abused woman’s shelter. Soon, she is convinced the police have the wrong man. She and Mattheus, thrown together again, reconsider their feelings for one another. But there may not be time Cindy finds out too much and comes in danger herself. As the murder hits too close to home, it may be too late for them both.

Death by Deceit (Caribbean Murder Series, Book 5) - edition by Jaden Skye. Romance eBooks @ . Reviews

Normally I will not criticize or whine abt grammar, spelling and editing but when it takes away from the
reading and flow of the book well that is just not right. This book needs some serious editing.
It is sometimes hard to read a book out of sequence but if it is done well it should not be that difficult. Not so in this case. The baggage and past history of Cindy and Mattheus overshadows most of the book so muchso that one loses any perspective.
And what the heck is Matteus's problem? He is so full of himslef and overbearing; cannot understand
why his former wife would ever leave his beautiful and gorgeous self-yeck!
The way the police department is portrayed is really shameful stupid, unable to follow clues, double standard etc. Will not read any other books in this series.
I like her books alot except I can't stand all the grammar issues. I wish someone would proof before going out to print. Still, love the books! I would keep reading them!
I've read the first 10 books in this series. Most of them I downloaded for free through various websites. I'm a fast reader but with this series I really struggled with these books. Books 1-7 it took me several months to read each individual book because (1) the plot was not fast paced enough to hold my interest, (2) there were several consistency errors in each book, and (3) there were TONS of typos throughout each of the books. However, books 8-10 were interesting enough that I finished all 3 of those within 2 weeks. If you can get past all of the errors then this is a fairly decent series.

The author either didn't have the books professionally edited or the editor she used needs to be blacklisted from the industry because the mistakes were major mistakes. Things like
"Peter suddenly put his heads back into his hands." Unless I'm mistaken this is a mystery series not science fiction and the character only has 1 head. I could understand making this mistake once but it popped up in other books too!!! "...gave the bartender a heads's up." Seriously? That's just sloppy typing and would have been caught if spell check had been used.

She would also misuse the apostrophe after characters names. She would sometimes leave out entire words so you were left wondering what she was trying to say and would have to guess at the intended meaning of the sentence.

As far as the consistency errors, sometimes a character would meet with Cindy and tell her something and then in the very next paragraph approach Cindy and she would mention it to that character and he or she would act as if they were hearing it for the first time.

Those are the kind of errors that almost made me stop reading this series halfway through the first book but I kept plugging away at it hoping it would get better or at least more interesting. Each book it finally did get interesting but not until the final 5 or 6 chapters except for books 8-10 and those held my interest right away. The editing is still atrocious in those and all of the books feel like she was completely distracted while she was writing them.

Overall, I think the entire series would benefit from a review by a professional editor.
Unfortunately, although the story line is interesting, and the characters are entertaining, THE EDITING IS AWFUL !!! I hate to leave bad Feedback and this series of books is the first EVER for which I've left negative feedback. After reading the initial book in the series, I purchased the set of 12 volumes in this Caribbean Murder Series. The editing gets WORSE and WORSE as the series of books goes onward. Having struggled through 7 of them because I enjoyed the characters, I am finally throwing in the towel. I am NOT interested in reading books 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 (although will NOT refund my money because it is 15 days since I purchased) and I must say FOR SHAME on the Author Jaden Skye for allowing good ideas to be presented in such a slip-shod manner. Not only excruciatingly BAD USAGE, but also confusion of character names. Nothing wrecks a story more than to have the main Detective's name exchanged for the name of the Murder Victim, and then the Murder Victim's name following in the next sentence. . .wait, who? REALLY BAD - NOT RECOMMENDED.
This book and the whole series are "fun" reads with pretty good plots, but my rating would have been better had there been real editing. For example, it is disconcerting to have speech attributed to a person who died before the book even opened. I would urge the author to get a knowledgeable person to read and edit the books before they come to . I'm not saying that I could plot out a book with interesting characters like she does, but I am a careful reader, and those type of errors are jarring.
The plot on this one was a bit of a stretch. In addition you also don't ever really know why the dead woman acted as she did. Once again the typos and mis-identification of characters proved to be a distraction. These novels cost as much as a paperback book and should receive better proofreading. I can chalk a few typos up to glitches in downloading but when you change the character speaking to someone that's not even in that chapter you have a proofreading problem. I will buy the remaining books because I am enjoying the locales and the main characters. If you buy these books be prepared for the proofing problems which means you'll have to pay attention to who is really doing the talking!
I have read all the books in this series. I enjoy the stories however, as a former teacher, I cannot read any more books until the author takes the professional step of having someone proofread the material before it is published. Even a friend could pick up the most glaring errors of incorrect word usage, spellings, and even incorrect names in some places. I realize the stories are light reading, but it is almost insulting to the reader that the author submits such poorly edited work.
