It is Christmas Eve. Binny has four hours to make Christmas happen and she couldn’t feel less like wishing glad tidings of good will to all men – least of all to Oliver. It is raining, her house is falling apart, the streets are jammed with people and it is all Oliver’s fault. Darting into a shop to escape a conversation, Binny finds herself in the sort of place she would never normally visit. But in amongst the shelves is a surprising source of peace.
A beautiful gem of a short story from Rachel Joyce, bestselling author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Perfect The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy.

“We had once what we can never have again. So why, then, do we behave as if everything we have connected with, everything we have blessed with our loving, should be ours for keeps? It is enough to have tiptoed to that space beyond the skin, beyond our nerve endings, and to have glimpsed things that beforehand we only half knew”
A Faraway Smell of Lemons is a Christmas Short Story by actress, radio playwright and author, Rachel Joyce. It may be Christmas, but Binny’s life has fallen apart: the faulty shower, the broken glass pane in the front door, the smashed crockery on the kitchen floor, the unbought Christmas cards, food and gifts; it’s all Oliver’s fault. What sort of Christmas Binny’s children, Coco and Luke are going to get this year is anyone’s guess. Binny has just a few hours to fix it, and a staggering lack of enthusiasm for the task. Trying to avoid another school mother in the High Street, she slips into a shop that sells nothing Binny has ever wanted, but she somehow finds exactly what she needs. A sweet story that may well bring a tear to the eye. 4.5 stars

Faraway Smell of Lemon eBook Rachel Joyce Reviews

I discovered Rachel a week ago and have read all her stuff! I can't wait for Queenie's story told! Who hasn't felt like Harold, on the drive to work sometimes a get the urge to keep going...
Anyway back to "A Faraway Smell of Lemon". The only complaint I have is that it's not longer. Her concise, yet poetic writing is never convuluted or tricky to follow but is pretty much written as humans think.
Just not enough of a story. I read the Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which was slowly developed and quite deep. I was expecting more of the same. Sorry, doesn't cut it.
This book is about an emtional awakening of the main character. She progresses from an apathetic state through fases to acceptance and a responsible attitude.
It is a story that makes you think as most of us can relate to aspects of the story. Thought provoking and in a sense put some things into perspective as seen through the main character's eyes.
Her new friend plays a pivotal role in the transformation taking place.
A sweet story.
I loved this short story/book. It was uplifting, well-written, intelligent, hopeful, loving, and very unique. Despite the fact that the underlying emotions could be easily identified by others, such as myself, who has gone through much of the same thing, I found it to be amazingly different in style, presentability and story plot. I would highly recommend this book!!! Thank you for writing it! I downloaded her new full length book because of loving this one so much too!
The protagonist is a big sloppy mess. Much like all of us. She's disorganized, forgetful, angry, sullen, self-absorbed, selfish, self-pitying; and did I mention angry? Her house is a disaster, no tree, no presents, no food, piled high with unwashed laundry and UN-shed tears. It is Christmas Eve. She has two young children and one young, immature ex-lover who has recently left her. She drags her sulky, unfriendly self into town and into a shop full of cleaning supplies; not the place one would expect for a personality transformation. Be impressed.

A short story that makes me wish for a novel--and yet, also just right. It's a story about loss and love, renewal and change, giving up and letting go, reaching out and reaching in. It evokes the senses in a way not often done in writing. Not all of the characters are well developed, primarily because of the short-story format, but there is enough flesh on them to make the story feel real. A worthwhile read if you have a few minutes and time think on it afterward.
Read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and enjoyed Joyce's writing. Ergo, I thought I would read this short story. It left me wanting more...not more of her short stories, but more substance. The heroine, Binney, is a complete mess on Christmas Eve. She is unprepared, no turkey, no presents, no decorations and her house sounds like a disaster that has evolved over years, not just since her live-in boyfriend left her. We have no insight into how her children feel about this situation, which I can imagine should be traumatized, yet they sound normal. A strange conversation with a clerk in a store which sells only cleaning products seems to enlighten Binney, and we are supposed to feel she is going to scurry home, put the place in order and turn her life around.

I love short stories and also flash fiction. You can share a lot in very few words. Joyce used a lot of words and didn't tell me much.
